How should I login to my switch? Why would I use ssh or telnet?

Cumulus Linux is based on Debian and therefore there are a myriad of ways to login to your switch. That said we recommend the usage of ssh as the method of choice.

Both telnet and SSH provide bidirectional interactive text-oriented communication facility using a virtual terminal connection.  Telnet sends all the data in plain text (read unencrypted).  SSH has been the standard since the 90s and designed specifically to replace Telnet because of this lack of security.  Please please use SSH!!  If you are a Windows user there is a free tool called putty that can SSH:
